of young democrats. to hear this man talk was really astounding. i am quite critical of the obama administration in terms of things i have done. in terms of hagel's nomination, i am very impressed. his views on foreign-policy almost seemed to dip -- too far beyond this era. my only feel is that the political parties will bring this ideology down simply because a lot of people are not prepared for it. thank you and have a good day. guest: i think -- i would beg to differ about the too far beyond this era. i had the privilege of working for former secretary of state george schultz. in my estimation, senator hagel's views are consistent with secretary schultz, whom i think is one of the giants of our time. i think they have the same sort of outlook of trying to be pragmatic and take a look at things from multiple dimensions and informed judgments based on the conditions of the time. i think we have had many people of this particular persuasion. we have been fortunate in our country to have many leaders like senator hagel. i share your hope that we continue to have them going forward.

that president obama and mrs. boim adopt a resolution -- mrs. obama adopt a resolution. it appears to me, mr. speaker, regard air force one very casually and i believe on some occasions two planes, at least two planes go to the same destination. air force one, mr. speaker, belongs to president and mrs. obama. but air force one also belongs to the american taxpayer. and i would welcome a new year's resolution that would provide generous lace of all future air force one dispatches with prudence, discipline and last but certainly not least fiscal austerity. america's taxpayers will be appreciative. incidentally, mr. speaker, air force one, designated by the air force as dc-25, incurs an operational cost per hour of $179,750, and on some occasions, additional aircraft accompany air force one by naturally adding to the cost. i'm going to now, mr. speaker, insert my -- that involve the former secretary of state, mrs. clinton, during a recent senate hearing. a senator who was examining secretary clinton suggested or implied that the administration may have misstated the nature of the benghazi attac

, and they have at the most popular politician in the country behind their back. president obama said he is ready to work with them. notably he and former president bill clinton had become more eager to get ahead, more progressive, vs senate democrats. you've got to be ready to compromise a little bit with the other elements of congress in the coming months. you are going to have defections when it comes to gun control, immigration, and what we may have to do with a fiscal policy. host: you touch on that point, an unlikely ally for house democrats, the speaker of the house, john boehner. guest: that is something that many democrats have pointed out. he made -- he may need them to get some of these bills passed. as he did with the debt ceiling vote. as he did with the bill for hurricane sandy victims. as it came with the fiscal cliff agreement. i see that as a possibility with a gun control and immigration, because while republicans cannot be eager and willing to discuss the issues, pulling suggest that the house may have to pass something. i will meet democrats. host: -- they will need democrats.

this the don't shift blame amendment. the bill before us today tries to blame president obama for all our fiscal woes. judging by the language of this legislation, i'm convinced that house republicans live in a world where our entire national debt suddenly appeared on january 21, 2009. but let's be clear. our debt was not created by the president alone, and while the president may be responsible for sending us a budget blueprint, it is ultimately congress that holds the power of the purse. i think my colleagues on the other side of the aisle are forgetting a key part of our job. the president does not pass budget, nor does he appropriate funds. congress does. my amendment makes a simple change to the finding section of the bill that clarifies that congress has the constitutional responsibility to fund the federal government. now, i can guarantee that when the majority introduces its budget this month it will be so extreme that it has no chance of passing both houses. the republican majority seems to be able to come together for meaningless proposals, but they know that when it comes to se
